Ancillary Tasks

Promoting the film

In film production there is more to it than just the film itself. Advertising and promoting a film plays a huge part in the success of a film. Furthermore in today's society there is more ways of reaching a larger audience than just word of mouth. As part of our ancillary task we are required to create a Radio advert and Poster to promote our film. I'll showcase my gradual progression from learning the codes and conventions to implementing them into my very own finished products.

Creating a Radio Advert
Research

The advantage of Radio Adverts is that they're a generally low spending plan type of promoting something. It could go from auto dealerships undercutting elite autos to films promoting their viewings at specific theaters. As a major aspect of advancing our short film we have to create a radio commercial for it, however to do its important to comprehend the codes and conventions of radio.
The codes and conventions are:
  • A radio advert will range between 15-60 seconds, however the average is 30 seconds.
  • The advertisement will tell you the qualities of the product or service.
  • There should be a music bed or jingle involved.
  • The language will be persuasive and tailored to the audience demographic.
  • The voice-over will be upbeat and lively to attract audiences.

Air time
I chose to research into existing radio notices on Soundcloud. The broadcasts  of the ads did range from as short as 20 seconds up to a moment. One thing I did see was that each radio notice was around a 10 second check (20-30-40-50-60 seconds). Through further research I found that radio commercials are obtained in 10 seconds. Basically the cost is every 10 seconds therefore to make utilization of the installment the advert ought to be near to a 10 second stamp.

Screenshot of radio adverts on Soundcloud
Advert 1: 0:30
Advert 2: 0:30
Advert 3: 0:58
Advert 4: 0:30

As you can see there is a popularity of 30 second radio adverts. Alongside that the majority of adverts are close or directly on a 10 second mark.
Music
Our films genre is a drama therefore our radio advert ought to be rather dramatic. Music or foundation sounds all in all can add an air to a radio advert. For our film in particular it appears to be rather fitting to include a portion of the drama from our film into the radio advert through ambient sounds. We do need to look into that the primary center of the radio ad is the voice-over. Considering this it'll be ideal to pick a soundtrack that is instrumental. This is so that it just makes environment and doesn't go about as a diversion from the voice-over.

he soundtrack above makes a rather dramatic climate with its substantial quick paced beat. This is the undoubtedly contender for our music decision due to how well it connections to our theme. All together for this music to work as needs be we have to deliver a script that is powerful and dramatic and select the best pieces.

Creating a Script

Script - Draft 1

*Dramatic instrumental begins and plays throughout*

All right so we've all heard of KARJ Productions,

They've just released a new film The job interview.

Now I know getting a job right now is difficult
and this film showcases that perfectly.

*Snippet from the film - dramatic scene*

Make sure you go see this film at the

London Film Festival and the Tricycle theatre on Kilburn high road.

We've had great rating so we suggest you go check it out.

*End of Radio Advertisement*

For our first drafting our script we wanted to make sure it was clear what exactly we were advertising. We started off by highlighting 'KARJ Productions' and what exactly we've done. Short films often reflect reality therefore we've emphasised how audiences can relate to the overall subject of the film. Including a snippet from the film serves as a preview of what to expect. We chose a dramatic scene where the two characters realise their situation to showcase the drama to be expected. The final section of our advertisement was making sure audiences knew where to go to view the film. It's important to persuade audiences to watch your film but its crucial that they know where to view it. We chose the London film festival because it's where film enthusiasts can watch popular and/or upcoming short films. The tricycle theatre was also chosen because its a well know theatre in the local area which hosts diverse film types.

Producing our Radio Advert

To create our radio advert we have to utilize the system Audacity. Audacity is an open source free programming committed to the altering and control of sound documents. We initially experienced this system in the AS course permitting us to have a decent comprehension of how to utilize it, for example, altering devices (fade in/fade out) or essential capacities (naming tracks and importing/exporting).

Naming tracks - screenshot 2

The two screenshots above show me naming two of the soundtracks as examples. To keep track of what each sound track is meant to be we named each file specifically by their sound information. The first track is named 'Kingscross Underground sound effect. Essentially it was named this because that's specifically what the sound track is of. The same goes for the purpose of the second name being first voice-over. By doing this for every new soundtrack that's added you can keep track of every sound track and their purpose. This follows onto the the third screenshot

This screenshot focuses on organisation too. Whilst creating our radio advert we found that organising the soundtracks straight away made it clear where each sound track was and where it would appear in the advert. We chose to order it via where it occurs in the radio broadcast. e.g. track 1 is the sound file that appears first.

Amplifying Tool

Understanding sound levels is important was important when creating our radio advert. There are multiple tracks occurring at once all with a different sound feature, therefore each track should have a different volume. The soundtrack was too loud so we had to use the amplifying tool to edit that.

A follow up from the first screen shot; this is what happens when you use the amplifying tool. The highlighted area has decreased in volume compared to the rest of that track.

Fade Out tool

The second effect we used in our production was the Fade Out tool. We found that using the fade out tool to end the radio advert would add a certain climatic feel through the gradual decline in sound to silence.
Exporting files

Screenshot of exporting the file as an MP3. The MP3 file format was chosen because it's the universal file format (most commonly used format). MP3 files are compressed (made smaller) enabling it to be easily sent over the internet.  Each file format caters towards a certain requirement such as WAV being used for storing uncompressed audio files.

Creating a Radio Advert

Radio Advert first draft

This is our first drafting of the radio commercial. The main issue I saw was the running time.. As already researched radio adverts are obtained in 10 seconds, be that as it may we've committed the error of squandering 5 seconds. The advert just keeps going 25 seconds in length which is an enormous concern. In the wake of seeing this we thought that it was useful to request criticism. The following are the remarks viewers made on the Soundcloud soundtrack.

Creating a Radio Advert
Feedback
Screenshot of the feedback we received from our first Radio Advertisement

Our feedback was amazingly valuable in light of the fact that it made clear what we did well on and what we ought to enhance. Little doubt remains that our accentuation on making the advert dramatic paid off. Viewers delighted in it and felt it agreed well with the snippets utilized.

One issue highlighted intensely was to do with the voice-over. The scripting basically wasn't up to scratch so it'll be to our greatest advantage to enhance that. On top of that the viewers didn't feel convinced into needing to watch the film. Influence is imperative in radio so its key that we include a more convincing voice-over tone.

Littler changes which need to be made is re-doing the consummation with the goal that it doesn't simply stop and rather for instance become dim. At last the date and time need to be added to the script so viewers have all the data on the film they require.

Questionnaire Feedback

And in addition utilizing the comments on Soundcloud we felt it was additionally important to give out polls and get some information about our radio advert. We asked five viewers the same four open inquiries to check whether there was a relationship in answers between them. Sentiments that surfaced more than once would be the unmistakable triumphs or issues of our radio advert.

Improving from feedback

Radio Advert Research

From the five questionnaires the feedback we received we took into consideration. Below the script comparisons we have compiled the feedback from all sources and concluded what we need to improve upon.

Comparison of the original script against the updated one.

From the feedback gathered from the Soundcloud comments and the surveys we found that the issues with the first draft were:
  • Introduction needs to be improved
  • No persuasive language
  • No date of when the film will be screened
  • Add some fitting sound effects
In the second script (upgraded adaptation) we initially began off by making another presentation. We highlighted the theme of rivalry through expressions like "Jobs are scarce and competitions fierce". The primary section is more dramatic and advances addressing which empowers the crowd to consider the film subject without doling a lot out.

There is presently apparent convincing dialect as non-serious inquiries. "How hard would you fight for this job?" rhetorical questions are not intended to be replied, they get the peruser considering, weather it is simply contemplating something, or ideally acknowledging, they are essential.

A slip-up on our part was excluding the date of the films seeing. Simply including will enhance our radio advert definitely. On Friday the 27th to Sunday the 29th the film will be qualified for review. Basically audiences can't see the film without knowing the dates of screening.

This is a screenshot of the picked sound impact for our radio advert. We utilized the site freesound.org which has thousands of sound documents from hints of the London underground to the sound of a cam taking a photo. All the sound records inside of this site can be downloaded for nothing out of pocket and are duplicate right free.

This is the sound effect we chose to add to the radio advert. It is 6 seconds recorded on kings cross underground. The motivation behind this short solid impact was to make an opening that connected to our film.  Many workers now commute to work utilizing the underground so we thought including the occupied with hustling environment of the underground would be useful. To a degree it makes the trip to work in our radio advert.

C
reating a poster
Research

Posters provide a cost-effective way of communicating with a target market. When designed correctly they can attract audiences to purchase products and services or attending specific events. Posters have the ability to stick in viewers' minds therefore advertising a film in such a way will be effective.
Our short film is called 'The Job Interview' therefore we need a poster that showcases that storyline. I found it best to research into current short film posters and see how they're designed.

Poster Research

Before I even conducted any sort of research. I took it upon myself to identify the codes and conventions of Short film posters. Below are some Short film posters i found.

All of the posters contain images of the main characters in the film, this is shown to be a very important convention to Short Film Posters. Generally the main character is positioned centrally in the poster which again tells the audience the characters are the main focus. Furthermore the lighting, colour scheme and position of the actors is a reflection of the characters in the film. Also the codes and conventions of the film genre are reflected in the layout, font choice and title positioning of the poster. Other Conventions:
  • Usually Portrait
  • Simple
  • Bold Font
  • Small amount of Text
  • Unique & Original
This was the first poster I found that I thought would help in creating our own film poster. The poster is generic and follows the same layout, however it'll be most effective when applied to our own poster. Essentially what appears in this poster should appear in our poster.  A big focus I'd like to make is on the text in this poster and what specifically it is. The header 'CARGO' has one purpose being to stand out and grab the attention of the viewer. It contrasts heavily with the background enabling it to further stand out.
Below the header there is a mass of text which lists all those involved in the production of this particular film and what their job was. This is seen commonly across all film posters and acts as an advertisement for the production team within another advertisement. Adding this would mean that we could display everyone involved in our short film production team in a professional fashion. Our production team will be smaller and all members of the group will have more than role therefore their name is likely to appear more than once.

Creating a poster
Conventions of our poster
Our film is The Job Interview and the poster needs to showcase that. The theme of rivalry needs to be obvious in our poster so audience have an ambiguous thought of what's in store from the film. We have to think seriously about the accompanying:
  • Background (imagery)
  • Colour Scheme
  • Text (Title)
  • Fonts (Type - Colour - Size)
These conventions are what make up most of the poster. We must verify that through these conventions we showcase the theme and/or sort of the film. The other conventions which make up the poster concentrate all the more on the ad area. The poster should likewise showcase the accompanying:
  • Cast members
  • Production name (KARJ Productions)
  • Production team
  • Social media URL
  • Website URL
Movies now-a-days put a substantial accentuation on utilizing online networking to publicize their film. This is done through setting up a Facebook page, Twitter channel, Instagram page and an official site. Online networking destinations produce substantial viewer constructs therefore publicizing a film with respect to such pages can create a great deal of 'verbal' for your film.

Chappie is a film which was discharged in cinemas on the 6th of march. Chappie like numerous other movies creation groups set up all the online networking conceivable before its discharge to create gathering of people and 'buildup'. It would be useful to additionally do this for our film.

Creating a poster
Designing a poster

Keeping in mind the end goal to outline short film poster we'll need to utilize certain product. The two projects that'll be utilized to make our poster will be Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign. Photoshop is a product devoted to photograph altering whilst Indesign is all the more so for expert distributed.

Drawing concept template for our poster
We began off by drawing an rough layout of where everything would go on our poster. Utilizing existing posters we mapped out a case for each. We've composed a rather nonexclusive poster as a rule which will be liable to change. The production team box is liable to stay in the same place just like the online networking and site URLs. In the upper left corner we've included our production name 'KARJ Productions'. It may appear like an odd spot to have it, on the other hand we feel having it near to the title would help publicize it.

Creating a poster
Background and Design

From our research we found that the dominant part of film posters had a dark foundation. Seeing the prominence of the dark foundation we chose our poster would likewise have one. The advantage of having a dark foundation implies that any outlines or content that are splendid hues will emerge all the more fundamentally. For the shading plan we based it off the dark foundation. White vigorously differentiates against dark which will make our content emerge strikingly.

Sports
One of the most competitive industries around the world is Sport. Sport is all about the top athletes of their respective game competing against each other. One sport in particular we looked at for inspiration was boxing. Boxing is a heavily competitive one on one sport and this is definitely  shown through their advertisements. Boxing promotional posters show the two boxers pinned up against each other to emphasise competition. For our poster we thought that we could apply the boxing styler poster to ours having our two protagonists facing up each other.

Boxing style promotional poster
Mayweather V.S Castillo
We decided to attempt to remake the boxing style poster using our own two protagonists.

Attempt 1 at boxing style design
Attempt 2 at boxing style design
To one side is our first endeavor at re-making the boxing style plan. We chose to have the two characters confronting straightforwardly at one another. We done this on the grounds that they're in immediate rivalry with one another so they ought to be specifically confronting one another. The issue with the first photograph is that the point of character one (left) is distinctive to that of character two (right). It appeared somewhat unbalanced with the points of their heads being diverse so we chose to re-shoot it.

The second shot to one side was an extraordinary change. The edges of their heads is currently even and you can practically feel there being focused strain between the two. The second change we made was taking the photo from somewhat further back indicating a greater amount of their abdominal area. In doing as such it just seems all the more intense as a picture for the two characters. You show signs of improvement comprehension of their non-verbal communication.

Creating a poster

Fonts
Text styles are an imperative piece of a poster. Certain text styles fit a theme more so than others therefore we have to discover one to fit shows and rivalry.

Font: IMPACT
This was the first text style we thought seriously about. It's a solid content which can be utilized for the theme of rivalry.

Font: CONSOLAS
This text style isn't as striking as the first and doesn't emerge as much, on the other hand it appears to be fitting to it being a job interview. The textual style demonstrates a certain polished methodology to it which could be helpful.

Font: ONYX
The third text style and by a wide margin the more prevalent one was ONYX. It joins the boldness and polished skill we need in our poster. On top of that its a rather remarkable and dynamic textual style sort which doesn't give the theme of the film specifically away. Makes a certain measure of vagueness.

Our official conclusion was to utilize ONYX text style for all broad content barring the title. ONYX is a suitable textual style for our theme, in any case we felt that it wasn't title material. It wouldn't emerge as much as obliged so all things considered we ran with an alternate thought. Utilizing a cam we chose to make long exposure pictures for each of our content. We took photographs in a dim room and drew out the states of every letter noticeable all around utilizing the light on an iPhone. (meets expectations with any light or light source).

Creating a poster

First Drafting

Completed first draft of our poster
Above is the first drafting of our film poster finished with all the conventions required. The theme of rivalry is clear in this poster by showing both the heroes confronting one another. Fight limited time posters frequently include the two fighters confronting one another to underscore rivalry. By doing likewise in our poster we could showcase a comparative rivalry for our film.

The second plan usage is the outline out of sight. The outline is of the third character in the film (the interviewer) so we thought that it was fitting to incorporate him in the poster. Having it as an outline rather than a typical picture highlights that there may be a potential turn.

Draft feedback

So as to enhance our poster we thought that it was fitting to request criticism. We recorded every persons criticism and put them all into a Voxpop. The subject of the Voxpop was 'What did you think about our film poster?'

The feedback overall for our first drafted poster was great. Audiences described it as "Attractive, Strong and persuasive to watch the film". There was only two issues highlighted from the feedback which came up often. The first of which was the colour scheme. It was "too dark" and needs a brighter background". One idea was to use a location within the film as the background. The second critique was that there was no indication on where the film would be aired so that needs to implemented.  Note worthy additions include repositioning the KARJ Productions text as it looked "too random".

Second  Drafting

As you can see we've pretty kept it the same before. We as a group deviated from from the audience feedback. Although we changed one thing! This was having 'would you fight for a job' in the middle. We wanted to make it seems as if the is addressing the person looking at the poster.

With this feedback in mind we'll develop a second drafting for our poster hopefully implementing the audiences suggestions.

Third and Final Draft

As you can see our final poster has major improvements done. First of all the layout has changed completely from landscape to portrait. There was a lot of disagreement amongst the group about this however we decided to change it portrait as most short film poster are portrait. The placement of the information stayed the same from the old poster the only alteration was putting the location of where the film will be shown and the film timing at the top. Yet we also changed the Placement of the Title. The draft earlier had it in a circular motion in the middle. We found that by change this it would be more easier to read at a split second instead of having to look on side ways. The last and final improvement was where it said 'How hard would you fight for a job' as supposed to 'Would you fight for a job' this was done so that the poster had a direct correlation to the Radio Advert.
